The Oasis of Hope provides one of the most advanced integrative cancer treatment approaches available anywhere in the world: Integrative Regulatory Therapy (IRT).

Now, Oasis of Hope California is offering IRT as part of a Cancer Support Program designed to diminish the adverse side effects of chemotherapy while at the same time make it work even more efficiently.

A unique aspect of this program is that patients can enroll in the program and receive its benefits while receiving chemotherapy from their primary oncologist at another medical center.

The thought of chemotherapy strikes fear into almost everyone. The main reason for this is the well-known list of side effects, such as pain, fatigue, nausea and hair loss to name a few, plus more possible serious complications.

However, chemotherapy has proven to work effectively for many cancers. Further, if a tumor has become life threatening due to its location or sheer size, chemotherapy can be a first-line treatment due to its ability to rapidly decrease a tumor's volume.

For these reasons, since the clinic's founding in 1963, Oasis of Hope has used chemotherapy when it was deemed absolutely necessary. In addition, during the almost half-century since, we have explored virtually every advancement that conventional oncology and alternative medicine has come up with to make it work even better.

We are pleased to put everything we have learned thus far into the Cancer Support Program and offer it at Oasis of Hope California's clinic in Irvine.

The Cancer Support Program (CSP) is a five-day protocol. Admissions are on Monday only, and the program runs every day through the end of Friday. For the best results, you will want to come the week before you are scheduled to receive cancer treatment at your other medical center.

Cancer Support Program

Oxidative Preconditioning: The first component of the Cancer Support Program is Oxidative Preconditioning Therapy. Oxidants are substances in our body that can damage our cells. Oxidants can be normal waste produced through our cell's normal metabolism - protein-rich meals produce many oxidants - or synthetic chemicals, heavy metals like mercury or any number of toxins. Oxidants do their harm because they are molecularly unstable and "grab" electrons, especially from cell membranes, DNA and mitochondria. Antioxidants are substances that easily donate electrons, and so neutralize oxidants before they can harm cells. Our body produces natural antioxidants and we can also ingest them in fruit and vegetables and additionally as supplements, such as vitamin C. However, if there are too many oxidants in our body, we may not be able to neutralize them all, which is a condition called oxidative stress. Chemotherapy agents attack cancer cells largely by acting as potent oxidants, but they do not distinguish between malignant and normal cells, and thus damage healthy as well as cancer tissue. Oxidative Preconditioning Therapy is intended to boost the capacity of the body's normal tissues to withstand the oxidative stress imposed by chemotherapy. Exposing cells to a transient and repeated mild oxidant stress increases the antioxidant defense system - our cells produce more natural antioxidants in response. A superior method to produce this effect is by breathing pure oxygen while in a pressurized hyperbaric chamber, Repeated hyperbaric oxygen sessions prior to chemotherapy may insure that the body's normal tissues are in much better condition to cope with the oxidative stress imposed by the subsequent chemotherapy. Thus, the intent of Oxidative Preconditioning Therapy is to make chemotherapy more tolerable for the patient while simultaneously improving the ability of the cancer treatment to destroy the tumor.

Cell Signal Transduction Therapy: Another component of the Cancer Support Program is Cell Signal Transduction Therapy. "Signal transduction" refers to the way in which cellular proteins undergo small and usually reversible changes in their structure to induce alterations in cell behavior. The genetic material of cancer cells is typically altered in ways that over-activate intracellular signaling pathways that promote unregulated growth and spread of cancer cells, and also make them harder to kill with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. CSP uses nutraceuticals (vitamin supplements with medicinal qualities, manufactured at a pharmaceutical grade) and nontoxic drugs to interrupt cell-signaling pathways in cancer cells. This slows cancer cells' ability to grow spread to distant organs and promote the growth of new blood vessels that feed tumors - as well as making them more vulnerable to chemotherapy.

Redox Regulatory Therapy: An important component of the Cancer Support Program is Redox Regulatory Therapy, which selectively targets tumor sites with intense levels of oxidative stress. This means that the therapy is designed to attack tumor cells only and present no harm to healthy tissue. The combination of high-dose intravenous vitamin C therapy, coupled with hyperbaric oxygen and the oxygen-carrier pill, Trental (pentoxifylline), achieves this desirable effect. The result is a therapy that can effectively hold tumor growth at bay while boosting the killing effect of concurrent chemotherapy.

Immune Stimulation Therapy: Another important key to the Cancer Support Program is Immune Stimulation Therapy. This therapy is designed to optimize the ability of the body's natural killer cells and T-cells to destroy cancer. This therapy employs a two-pronged approach. The first prong involves the use of natural products that boost the function of the immune system. The second prong involves the use of substances that block the mechanisms tumors use to suppress the immune system.

Diet & Exercise: Another goal of the Cancer Support Program is to teach patients how they can successfully improve their diets and exercise habits. The scientific evidence of the preventive and curative benefits of a diet low in fats and animal proteins is compelling. In addition, the preventive and curative benefits of regular aerobic exercise have been widely acknowledged by the medical community for decades. Emotional Support: An extremely fundamental component of the Cancer Support Program is emotional support. The correlation between the positive nature of a person's attitude and the improved functioning of their immune system, and physical health in general, is well-supported in peer-reviewed medical literature. The management of cancer can tax the strongest individual; the energy required to learn about the illness, embrace treatment and alter lifestyle creates a need for an external emotional support system that serves to strengthen and refresh the patient. We seek to provide an emotional support structure because it provides a powerful and positive boost to patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Spiritual Support: We hope we can help each patient develop a sense of spiritual security. There is no question that the fear and anxiety related to treatment, as well as facing the possibility of death and an uncertain afterlife, can have a significant impact on a patient's overall physical and emotional state. Therefore, we seek to provide avenues for patients to develop the hope, peace and security that stems from a healthy relationship with God. This, too, will positively impact a patient's ability to engage in the whole process of disease management.

Lymphatic Therapy (Light Beam Generator): The most unappreciated circulatory system in the human body is our lymphatic system. Too many health practitioners never consider the critical role lymph plays in preventing sickness and restoring us to health if we become ill. The Cancer Support Program employs a non-invasive technology is called the Light Beam Generator (LBG) It is a swift, safe and natural method of eliminating excess lymphatic fluid. The LBG uses specific electromagnetic frequencies to enhance the free flow of inter-cellular fluid into the lymph system, and break up protein blockages within the lymph system to facilitate drainage.

Sauna Therapy : Sauna Therapy is a thermal therapy that has been recognized throughout history as a viable means of relaxing and cleansing the body, improving overall health, and promoting a sense of well being. Saunas are recommended as safe and effective adjunctive therapy for detoxification. The therapeutic rationale for using sauna therapy is that overheating the body, and hence inducing an artificial fever, stimulates metabolism, inhibits the growth of bacteria, increases the ability of all vital organs and increases the capacity of the skin to eliminate, detoxify and cleans via profuse sweating.

The saunas that Oasis of Hope California uses are Far Infrared Saunas (FIR). These were developed in Japan in the 1960's on the theory that the frequency of far infrared radiation was especially efficacious in releasing the bonds between toxins and cellular fluids. Subsequent research, primarily in Japan, seems to support that contention. FIR Saunas have been a staple of progressive medical clinics in Japan for decades now.

Foot Detoxification: Foot detoxification (also called ionic baths or ionic cleanse) is an external detoxification method that removes toxins through your feet. The foot detoxification equipment generates a stream of positive and negative ions, that attract and attach themselves to oppositely charged toxic particles and draws them out of the body through the skin.
