Oasis of Hope offers a range of cancer treatment protocols, under the collective name Integrative Regulatory Therapy (IRT). The key word here is “integrative”. The various therapeutic elements employed:
This strategy takes advantage of the fact that many cancers need moderate amounts of oxidative stress to multiply efficiently, but are susceptible to being killed with high levels of oxidative stress. Therefore, high-dose intravenous vitamin C administered with \l "k3" vitamin K and \l "perftec" Perftec, are used to produce potentially lethal levels of \l "k3" hydrogen peroxide in tumors which results in high levels of oxidative stress. This combination is lethal to cancerous tumors but in no way harms normal tissues which have adequate antioxidant defenses.
Oxidative Preconditioning
The intent of Oxidative Preconditioning is to boost the capacity of the body's healthy normal cells to cope with high levels of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is an important mediator of the adverse side effects of chemotherapy. Oxidative preconditioning is achieved with ozone autohemotherapy and ultraviolet blood irradiation.
Immune Stimulation Therapy
Immune stimulation therapy aims to boost the anticancer activity of immune cells (i.e. white blood cells) by stimulating their activation, while at the same time blocking the activity of tumor-generated agents that deactivate or kill immune cells. A well-functioning immune system is often crucial for maintaining long-term remission, and for inhibiting the \l "metastases" metastatic spread of cancer.
Signal Transduction Therapy
Signal transduction refers to the way in which cellular proteins undergo small and usually reversible alterations in their structure that induce alterations in cell behavior. The problem with cancer cells is that specific signal transduction pathways are augmented or over-expressed in relation to their \l "mTerms" malignant behavior such as, cellular multiplication, tissue invasion, \l "metastasis" metastasis to distant organs, and resistance to chemotherapy or radiation.
Cytotoxic Therapy
The effectiveness of chemotherapy is often limited due to the poor \l "tumorhypoxia" oxygenation of tumors, this is known as hypoxia, as well as to increased or decreased activity of specific signaling pathways that help cancer cells survive cytotoxic assault (chemotherapy). Also, toxicity to normal tissues often limits the doses of chemotherapy that can safely be administered.
Emotional Support
Through education sessions, group therapy, individual counseling, laughter therapy, and music and art programs, the counselors at Oasis of Hope support patients as they transform a paradigm of helplessness to a new hope-filled outlook.
Spiritual Support
There is no question that the fear and anxiety associated with treatment, possible death and the uncertainty of the afterlife can have a significant impact on your overall physical and emotional state. Therefore, we seek to provide avenues for you to develop the hope, peace and security that stems from a healthy relationship with God. This, too, will positively impact your ability to engage in the whole process of disease management.
Although the IRT protocols share many common elements, the therapy employed for a given patient is individualized in accordance with the patient’s needs and desires. For patients whose tumors can be expected to be relatively sensitive to chemotherapy, the IRT-Q (the “Q” stands for “quimioterapia”) may be a good choice. The IRT-Q protocol includes pre-conditioning strategies – such as ozone autohemotherapy, infusion of the oxygen carrier Perftec, and various nutraceuticals and safe drugs – intended to render the cancer cells more sensitive to chemotherapeutic attack while simultaneously protecting healthy tissues. Patients on the IRT-Q protocol also receive intravenous infusions of high –dose vitamin C and various supportive agents intended to kill tumor cells selectively by inducing intense oxidative stress. For patients whose tumors used to be sensitive to specific chemotherapies, but have grown resistant, a novel strategy known as epigenetic therapy can be employed in an effort to restore the tumor’s sensitivity to those drugs.
For patients for whom chemotherapy appears inadvisable, or who prefer to avoid chemotherapy, the IRT-C protocol offers a more intensive series of treatments with high-dose intravenous vitamin C. And some patients on this protocol may elect to try a more elaborate version, IRT-C/I, which in addition provides a novel and promising immunotherapeutic strategy known as allogeneic lymphocyte immunotherapy. This entails intravenous infusion of 70 million lymphocytes (a type of cancer fighting white cell) derived from a young person unrelated to the patient; these lymphocytes do not attack the cancer directly, but rather boosts the body’s own capacities to fight the cancer by stimulating dendritic cells, which play an essential role in orchestrating the body’s anticancer response.
All patients receive an elaborate at-home regimen of nutraceuticals and safe drugs that is intended to slow cancer growth and spread, and protect the patient’s well-being, while the patient lives at home between visits to Oasis of Hope. And, while at Oasis of Hope, all patients receive instruction on dietary measures for cancer prevention and control, get to enjoy wonderful buffet meals that are as delicious as they are health-supportive, and have access to laughter therapy, fellowship with fellow patients, and psychological and spiritual counseling, to help them cope with the stress of living with cancer.
