Therapy for Ovarian Cancer at Oasis of Hope

The best treatment we can offer for patients with ovarian cancer is the IRT. The 5–year survival rate at the Oasis of Hope for patients with ovarian cancer stage IV (metastatic) with the IRT-Q protocol is almost 60%. Patients who elect to have alternative and integrative cancer treatment at Oasis of Hope are offered protocols that have proven efficacy for their specific histological type of ovarian cancer, and that are administered within the context of a complex and sophisticated IRT-Q protocol that works in numerous complementary ways to boost the sensitivity of tumor cells to cytotoxic destruction while minimizing damage to normal tissue. Measures which include ozone autohemotherapy, Vitamin B-17, the oxygen-carrier Perftec, high-dose biotin, salsalate, bicarbonate tumor alkalinization, vitamin D, selenium, fish oil, and melatonin are employed in conjunction with chemo with the intent of boosting tumor cell uptake of chemo drugs, offsetting the resistance of poorly-oxygenated tumor regions, and suppressing signaling pathways within the cancer that promote treatment resistance – all while minimizing risk for dangerous or unpleasant side effects. Ultra-aggressive chemo protocols that would be likely to induce severe side effects are avoided, in line with Oasis' principle of "first do no harm".

For patients who have become resistant to chemo drugs that previously were effective for them, a strategy employed at Oasis known as epigenetic therapy, involving the safe drugs valproate and hydralazine, has the potential to re-establish sensitivity to cancer treatment. Patients on the IRT-Q also receive several courses of intravenous vitamin C therapy that includes vitamin K and oxygenation measurements to boost tumor oxygenation and catalyze oxidant generation, in an effort to kill more of the cancer cells with severe tumor-specific oxidative stress.

For patients who do not elect to have chemotherapy, or for whom chemotherapy would appear to be a poor option, the IRT-C protocol offers a more intense series of intravenous vitamin C sessions. Intravenous vitamin C therapy at Oasis is distinguished by novel adjunctive features such as ozone autohemotherapy and administration of Perftec and vitamin K, which are intended to boost tumor oxygenation and catalyze oxidant generation so as to maximize cancer cell kill. Patients with ovarian cancer also may also elect to receive allogeneic lymphocyte immunotherapy, a novel strategy which has shown promising efficacy in recent studies and in initial clinical experience; the intent of this strategy is to optimally activate the body's dendritic cells so that they in turn can activate the cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells capable of attacking the cancer. This immunotherapy is given in the context of the IRT-C/I protocol, which includes sessions of vitamin C therapy and numerous alternative cancer treatments intended to support effective immune function.

When patients are not in residence at Oasis, they are given a sophisticated At Home regimen featuring an array of nutraceuticals and safe drugs, intended to slow the growth and blunt the aggressiveness of residual tumor, support the immune response, suppress the angiogenic process that promotes tumor growth, and reduce risk for complications such as cachexia. Another nutraceutical employed that may be specifically beneficial in ovarian cancer is soy isoflavones. Patients also receive guidance on diet and lifestyle, with the intent of decreasing the bioactivity of key hormones that promote the growth of many cancers. And all of these therapeutic options are provided in the context of an underlying philosophy that that the whole patient must be treated, not just a cancer – that the psychological and spiritual needs of the patient are as worthy of attention as physical needs.
