Supporting Whole-Body Health Through Dental Care

This approach to dentistry focuses on the connection between oral health and overall wellness, helping patients address dental issues that may impact their general health.

Why Biological Dentistry Matters in Oncology

Biological dentistry looks at dental findings through a whole-person lens. For patients in cancer treatment, this can mean:

  • Lowering inflammatory burden: Addressing gum disease and chronic infections may reduce ongoing inflammatory signals that compete with healing.
  • Protecting treatment tolerance: Pre-treatment dental clearance can help prevent complications like dental infections during chemotherapy or head/neck radiation.
  • Optimizing materials & exposures: When restorations are needed, a biological approach favors biocompatible materials and low-toxicity techniques.
  • Supporting nutrition: Comfortable, functional teeth and gums make it easier to maintain the high-protein, anti-inflammatory nutrition we prescribe.

What to Expect From your Complimentary Visit

Your consult (included with all Oasis of Hope protocols) is scheduled with our external partner in biological dentistry. The evaluation typically includes:

  • Comprehensive oral exam with periodontal assessment
  • Review for periodontal pathogens, hidden infections, failing restorations, root-canal status, cavitation risks, and bite/airway considerations.
  • Discussion of materials biocompatibility (e.g., alternatives to certain metals) and options for low-toxicity restorative care.
  • Coordination with your Oasis of Hope team regarding timing

If any treatment is advised, the dentist will explain options, costs, and timing. You decide what to proceed with; we help sequence it within your overall program.

How we Integrate Dental Recommendations with your Plan

Your Oasis of Hope clinicians and the external dentist share pertinent information (with your consent) to keep plans aligned. Examples:

  • Before immunotherapy: Prioritizing resolution of active infections and stabilizing gum health.
  • During recovery weeks: Scheduling low-stress, phased dental work (when needed) between systemic treatments.
  • For restorations/extractions: Considering biocompatible materials, gentle techniques, and post-procedure supports (nutrition, minerals, hydration).

Common Biological Dentistry Services

  • Periodontal therapy focused on reducing pathogen load and inflammation.
  • Restoration planning with biocompatible materials; discussion of legacy metal/amalgam management using recognized safety protocols when indicated.
  • Assessment of root-canal risks and options for compromised teeth.
  • Guidance on saliva support, oral microbiome care, and home routines to protect enamel and gums during intensive therapy.
  • When helpful, ozone applications or laser adjuncts (dentist-dependent) to support localized oral care.
