What is Natural Killer (NK) Cell Therapy?

How the Therapy is Developed
The process begins with a blood collection, usually through a blood draw or leukapheresis, to obtain peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In our cGMP-compliant, ISO-certified immunotherapy laboratory, NK cells are carefully separated and cultured under conditions that promote their growth and activation. This is achieved by exposing the cells to cytokines such as interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-15 (IL-15), and other immune-stimulatory factors that enhance both their cytotoxicity and proliferation. Over the course of expansion, millions of highly active NK cells are generated, significantly boosting the patient’s immune arsenal against cancer.
How It Works in the Body
Once reinfused into the patient, NK cells circulate throughout the body and migrate to tumor sites. Unlike T cells, which must recognize specific tumor antigens, NK cells kill through a different mechanism: they detect cells with abnormal or missing MHC class I molecules—a hallmark of many tumor cells attempting to evade immune detection. NK cells then induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in these malignant cells using perforin and granzymes, powerful cytotoxic proteins that penetrate the cancer cell membrane. In addition to direct killing, NK cells release cytokines such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), which further activate other immune cells and improve antigen presentation, creating a ripple effect that strengthens overall anti-tumor immunity.
Advantages of NK Cell Therapy
