What Is Laetrile (Vitamin B17 / Amygdalin)?
Laetrile—often called Vitamin B17—is a purified form of amygdalin, a natural compound found in apricot kernels, bitter almonds, and other seeds. At Oasis of Hope, we’ve used Laetrile for decades as a supportive, adjunctive therapy within our integrative metabolic programs. For safety and consistency, it’s prepared in a controlled IV formulation and given under the care of a doctor and a registered nurse. Laetrile is never used on its own; we fold it into a broader plan that can include high-dose vitamin C, hyperthermia, ImPACT immunotherapy, targeted nutrition, and detox support.
How it Works
After infusion, amygdalin can be broken down by the body into several small molecules—one of which forms signifucant amounts of hydrogen cyanide. The idea behind Laetrile is to take advantage of differences between cancer cells and healthy cells. Many tumors show altered metabolism and enzyme patterns, which may make them less able to neutralize this oxidative stress. By contrast, normal tissues generally have stronger “cleanup” enzymes (such as rhodanese and catalase) that help detoxify and balance these signals. In simple terms, Laetrile aims to create a focused challenge to abnormal cells—one that can disrupt their energy processes and encourage natural cell death (apoptosis).
