Intravenous Antioxidant Therapy

This therapy administers vitamin C intravenously to achieve therapeutic levels in the bloodstream, helping support oxidative balance and cellular function.

At Oasis of Hope, High-Dose IV Vitamin C is offered as an adjunctive, integrative option within comprehensive cancer care. Giving vitamin C directly into the vein lets us reach pharmacologic blood levels that simply aren’t possible by mouth. At these levels, Vit C can behave like a targeted pro-oxidant in tumor tissue, acting as a precursor for hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Because many tumors appear to have less catalase—the enzyme that breaks down peroxide—than surrounding healthy tissue, they may be less able to neutralize this H₂O₂, allowing for a degree of selective impact on cancer cells while sparing normal cells.

How it Works

When infused at high concentrations, vitamin C hands off electrons to oxygen, creating superoxide and then hydrogen peroxide. With good oxygen availability and the right cellular “electron shuttles” (electron-transfer catalysts), this brief, local burst of H₂O₂ can exceed a tumor’s antioxidant defenses and damage cancer cells. If catalase is present, it quickly clears the peroxide and the effect fades—one of the key observations behind describing Vit C as a pro-drug for on-site peroxide generation in tumor tissue.

Why IV & How it Delivered

Tablets can’t produce or sustain the blood peaks needed for the chemistry above. That’s why our clinical use relies on intravenous doses measured in dozens of grams, delivered as staged infusions with short pauses to keep levels in the desired window. We run infusions at controlled rates and schedule them in treatment blocks that align with the rest of your plan, so exposure is built and sustained in a steady, coordinated way.

What Shapes Response

Three practical factors appear to influence results, and our protocol is designed with them in mind:

  1. Tumor catalase: Higher catalase can neutralize peroxide more effectively.
  2. Electron-transfer partners: Having the right redox “helpers” encourages superoxide/H₂O₂ formation.
  3. Oxygenation: Adequate oxygen supports the reaction; low oxygen (hypoxia) can blunt it.

To address these, we pair IV vitamin C with oxygenation strategies and selected redox adjuncts that support electron transfer, and we space infusions to maintain useful exposure over a series.

Combination Approaches

  • Vitamin K3 (menadione) + Vitamin C. In some cases, we administer vitamin K3 just before vitamin C as an electron-transfer catalyst, with the aim of enhancing peroxide generation in tumors that appear to have lower catalase. Early preclinical and clinical observations suggest this pairing can be synergistic and may interact favorably with selected cytotoxic drugs.
  • Oxygenation / ozone-inclusive protocols. Because peroxide generation is oxygen-dependent, vitamin C is often placed within care plans that include ozone-based oxygenation to support tissue oxygen dynamics and the intended redox effect.
